Winner of the Turner Prize in 2001, British artist Martin Creed has followed an extraordinary trajectory, blurring traditional artistic categories through a minimalist approach that strips his work of anything superfluous—while preserving a sharp sense of wit, humor, and surprise.
Spanning media such as painting, drawing, music, dance, theater, film, sculpture, and fashion, Creed’s practice reflects on everyday existence and the visible and invisible structures that shape our lives.
Creed produces works according to a set of rules within a predetermined conceptual framework. His pieces are characterized by elemental directness, accessible formats, economical use of materials, and a kind of absurd deadpan expression. Since 2006, he has been making large-scale wall paintings in the tradition of Sol LeWitt. The composition and dimensions of each piece are determined not only by the materials used but also by the location of the installation.
