Proyecto AMIL, Lima

In the context of Videos From This Woman: Performance Documentation 1997-2010, Elena Tejada-Herrera and Proyecto AMIL invites the public to participate in: PAPER ANIMALS- performance workshop of collective creation.

During the event Elena Tejada-Herrera will work directly with participants in the creation of their own paper animals, which then will be used and taken home. The performance workshop will end with a collective photo to document the group dynamic. Audiences of all ages, especially children, are welcome.

PAPER ANIMALS (2002-2006) is one of the first participatory performances that Elena Tejada-Herrera developed after moving to the US. The performance, conducted over several years with the complicity of the artist’s friends and students, responds to a long interest in exposing the arbitrariness with which the boundaries between the natural and cultural worlds are established. With a subversive sense of humor, in PAPER ANIMALS Tejada-Herrera inverts these hierarchies by promoting situations in which “animals” assume human characteristics and engage in complex social relationships.
