Advances and collaborations in the context of Martin Gustavsson’s Open Studio

During the month of March, Proyecto AMIL has been an active platform of creative interchange and production. This Thursday 31st March, from 7 pm we invite you to Moving On, an event to exhibit the progress of the Open Studio of Martin Gustavsson, the current artist in residence at Proyecto AMIL.
In partnership with Rho Das Canibal, Gustavsson will present his latest series of large format paintings and new tie-dye sculptures. Also on view, the sculptural work of artist Maria Abaddon and a video mapping projection by Luis Peralta.
In addition, la Asociación para la Investigación Teatral “La otra Orilla” (LOT), will have an open rehearsal of Philoctetes, a play directed by Carlos Cueva and performed by Lita Sousa, Lucia de María, Erika Aguilar, Basilio Soraluz and Rafael Freyre. This staging is an interdisciplinary project that confronts the old Greek myth of Philoctetes, originally written by Sophocles, with more recent versions, such as John Jesurun’s rendition (USA, 1990). Philoctetes was a Greek general who during the course of a military expedition to Troy, was abandoned by his companions on the deserted island of Lemnos after receiving a snakebite that caused him a painful and grievous wound. Paradoxically, after ten years, the oracle predicts that his bow and arrow will be essential to win the war against Troy, forcing Ulysses and Neoptolemus to travel to Lemnos to ask for his forgiveness. From more contemporary perspectives, this play has been interpreted as opening a space of reflection about the stigmatization of people suffering from chronic illnesses with a high risk of contagion such as AIDS, or simply bearing a lifestyle that is at odds with what has been socially prescribed as the common good.
Martin Gustavsson’s Open Studio will continue until 21st April.
