For the fourth edition of AMIL- Art Sessions, Mijail Mitrovic will present Mass Without Subject: Music and Class in Contemporary Peru*, a musical conference in which the anthropologist and researcher will review the history of popular music in contemporary Peru, giving special attention to the transition from cumbia to chicha that has taken place from the seventies to the present; as well as interrogating the role that class has played in the determination of sound, the lyrics and, last but not least, of the political horizon inscribed in them. The hypothesis that underlies the conference is that, as in the visual arts, through music it is possible to trace the impasses of society. Mass Without Subject: Music and Class in Contemporary Peru will alternate the listening of complete songs with reflection and analysis; therefore the total duration of the musical conference will be one hour and a half.

AMIL- Art Sessions is a series of monthly encounters at Proyecto AMIL aimed to expand artistic and curatorial practice beyond the temporal and spatial limitations of exhibition making. Throughout this series Proyecto AMIL seeks to promote alternative ways to talk about and experience contemporary art; as well as create a platform for exchange between artists, curators, researchers and our local audience.
