María Abaddon recently came across a packet of seeds. On it was written: “The seed must be planted.” On the rotting concrete of Camino Real, Abaddon recreates an artificial life cycle inside the glass case of a vacant storefront. A human-sized terrarium of life and death. The tropical plants exist in a moment within their own cycle, nourished by soil made from the remains of past vegetation. The installation confronts us with this natural cycle of death as the foundation of life. Abaddon seeks to move us away from the sanitization of our own mortality through a longing to return to this cycle of decay, spawning, and rebirth.

In their studio in Lima, Abaddon is planting every seed they find. In this long-term life experiment, it is both impossible and irrelevant to know how the project will end. It is a moment suspended in time, harboring the potential of the future—beyond our own morbid bodies. Here, for a moment, a world of partial shadow is present.
