proyectoamil is pleased to invite you to the exhibition Presupermarket by John Huamani, curated by Ixel Rion, opening this July 10th at our Barranco space. This marks our second collaboration with the artist, in 2023 he participated in our collaborative laboratory Haciendo Contexto VI.
John Huamani’s work reflects on hegemonic practices in socio-economic policies in Peru through various media such as painting, sculpture, and installation. His practice focuses on topics such as the exploitation and circulation of natural and human resources in relation to the illusion of progress. At the same time, he seeks to establish emotional connections by confronting the imaginaries associated with the contemporary economic model and the experience of inhabiting space and architecture.
“His most recent project, Presupermarket, explores installation as a medium for generating a sustainable consumption experience in the spectator. Based on research spanning Lima’s historical archives, John has compiled and fictionalized multiple sources of data and testimonies to shape and propose an institutional and commercial framework that, through humor and irony, questions current market policies.
With acuteness, Huamani poses a complex question that, for a few seconds, halts our shopping frenzy and discount fever: are shopping malls our leisure centers? Yet, the possible answers to this question unsettle us while also confirming our commitment to capitalism, a system we vehemently reject for its cannibalistic practices against labor rights and the enormous waste it generates, but which, on other days, we love, especially during sale season, when we really need that pair of shoes to match last year’s trench coat. We all love new things!”
