proyectoamil is pleased to invite you to the fitness and folklore event to inaugurate the exhibition FOLCLOR GYM by Gabriel Acevedo Velarde.
For more than 15 years, some instructors of traditional Peruvian dances have been teaching dance in different gyms, mixing, the original dance steps with movements from fitness. Folklore Dance Peru, Folklore Mix and Electrofolklore are some of the companies-brands that these instructors have founded in Huancayo and Lima. For Gabriel Acevedo Velarde, the socio-cultural fragmentation of the country makes it difficult for this type of initiative to become popular on a national level. In light of this problem and the context of the pandemic, the artist decided to collaborate with the emerging folklore scene in gyms by making fitness video clips for home use and documentary videos. The result is FOLCLOR GYM, a project made in collaboration with the teachers Arturo Poma and Miriam Sernaqué, who created and performed the dance-exercise routines. Furthermore, Acevedo summoned a group of young contemporary artists to design the sports apparel and also electronic music producers, who arranged free versions of the music of four dances that have been declared National Cultural Heritage.
FOLCLOR GYM will be presented in two moments. For the inauguration there will be a fitness event by the aforementioned instructors as well as Salomon Tazza, a special guest from Huancayo. A series of video clips made with the music of Úrsula Talavera (DJ Shushupe), Felipe Salmon (from the duo Dengue Dengue Dengue Dengue), Erick Del Aguila, Julio Lugon and Joel Mendoza Acuña will be presented. The sports apparel designed by artists Jimena Chávez Delion, José María Denegri, Muriel Holguín and Daniel Tremolada will also be on display.
The ensuing event (in August) will feature video documentaries on the folkloric fitness scene and the original places where the dances come from. These are, Danza Guerrera Shajshas de Aco Corongo (Áncash), Jija Ruku (Huancabamba, Huánuco), La Huaconada (Mito – Junín) and Llameritos de Chumpi (Ayacucho).
