TURN(into) is the title of the 2024 edition of the laboratory. To undergo a transformation or simply change direction can mark a pivotal moment in one’s life. It may manifest as an act of self-defense, a form of protest, or a demonstration of activism. Alternatively, it could signify a spiritual awakening or an internal psychological shift. Approaching this subject from a feminist perspective, the metaphor of turning into stone might symbolize a plea for defense against oppression.
In the realm of art, there is a tendency to seek out the human or animal essence within objects or formations and subsequently transform them into sculptures or paintings.
Exploring the magical and historical context of the Central Andes, we encounter instances of searching for spiritual significance in objects and landscapes, often tied to power dynamics and consent. The anonymous writings in the “Manuscrito de Huarochiri” offer examples of animals, humans, and gods turning into stone in ancient times. Additionally, the act of turning is associated with the lathe, a tool that, through its motion, transforms raw material into functional objects.
These objects and transformations can be viewed as constructions and shared memories from bygone eras. They symbolize the conversion of inert matter into a sign — an emblem of transformation and, simultaneously, an object of resistance.
For the seventh edition of Making Context VII, we aim to shed light on the question of what animated objects represent in the context of contemporary Peruvian art. What metamorphoses are possible for these objects?
How can artistic practices capture the essence of impermanence, the abject, and the incomprehensibility of the universe inherent in such objects?
Collaborative work can take many routes depending on the dynamics and interests of each of the artists in the group. In fact, participants are encouraged to research their personal archives and experiences in relation to the theme, while exploring different ways of making art together.
It is essential that participants commit to the laboratory in terms of time and effort. During February the participants will work virtually and from March onwards the collaborative work will begin in person. proyectoamil will cover the flights, expenses and lodging of the artists who come from the provinces.
