Proyecto AMIL and the artists Martin Gustavsson and Rodrigo Gómez Olivos are pleased to launch its national open call to art students and self-taught artists, to be part of the Collaborative Laboratory of Contemporary Art: HACIENDO CONTEXTO III.
Hyper-Society: Quipus as Metaphor is the tittle of 2019 edition of the laboratory, which proposes quipus as a cultural signifier capable of introducing new understandings and affects into cultural production in an era in which the digital society and its hyper-connectivity has paradoxically alienated us from collective endeavours.
The quipus are the physical evidence of knowledge systems and practices that are partly forgotten and partly ritualized. Findings from historians and anthropologists coincide in the fact that they are technological devices used to narrate stories through the mixes of knots, textures, size and colours. However, there’s no consensus in relation to the information they carried. According to some, quipus stored epic chronicles of the Inca Empire, other researchers would maintain that they only contained quantitative data. During the laboratory the possible ramifications of these divergent theories and the symbolisms quipus can activate today will be explored. At the same time, the importance of these artefacts for Peruvian artists and art history will be discussed.
The collaborative work can take many routes depending on the dynamics and interests of each of the artists in the group. In fact, participants are encouraged to investigate their personal archives and experiences in relation to the subject, while exploring the different forms of art making together.
It is essential that the participants commit to the laboratory in terms of time and effort. Proyecto AMIL will cover the domestic flights, accommodation and expenses of the artists coming from Peruvian cities outside of Lima.
