proyectoamil and Centro de Investigación del movimiento Tumbes_204 present Japanese butoh dancer and Noguchi Taiso teacher Mari Osanai in Lima for the first time, as part of her South American tour.
The artist will present Black Moon on two exclusive dates. This solo piece explores the different stages of human life through the metaphor of the lunar cycle. Inspired by the circular movements, waves, spirals, and vortices of the universe, the work seeks to translate these forces into the body and draw parallels with the course of a human life, understood as a constant cycle of transformation.
The piece features a soundscape by Charles Christophe and a mask created by Shohei Yamashita. Choreography, costume design, and performance are by Mari Osanai.
About the Artist
Mari Osanai is a Japanese butoh artist and Noguchi Taiso teacher. Born and raised in Aomori, Japan, she began her artistic training in classical ballet and modern dance. She later studied jazz dance, Tai Chi, Tsugaru Te Odori—the traditional folk dance of the Tsugaru region—and Noguchi Taiso.
She studied under master Hironobu Oikawa, whose research was connected to the ideas of Antonin Artaud and the pantomime of Étienne Decroux.
The philosophy and practice of Noguchi Taiso, developed by Michizo Noguchi, have been central to her work. From this perspective, the body is understood as part of matter and of the Earth’s processes of transformation, existing in a constant state of flow and change.
This approach has guided Osanai’s research and the development of her own movement language, in which the diverse techniques, practices, and bodily traditions that have shaped her artistic journey converge.
