proyectoamil and Buh Records are pleased to present, for the first time in Lima, the Basque artist, musician, and theorist MATTIN, who will lead two key activities at our Barranco venue. In the Social Dissonance Workshop, participants will engage in various forms of experimentation and improvisation with the artist. The results of the workshop will be presented in a live concert by Mattin. This same project was previously featured in documenta14 in Athens and Kassel.

Confused? Then this workshop is for you.
This workshop will explore noise, listening, and improvisation in relation to contemporary subjectivity. Through listening exercises, debates, and score interpretation, we will investigate the idea of social dissonance.

In recent years, Mattin has developed the concept of social dissonance, starting from the notion of cognitive dissonance. While cognitive dissonance refers to the contradiction between two conflicting beliefs or values, social dissonance is a structural form of cognitive dissonance that arises from the discrepancy between the belief that we are free individuals in a democratic society and the reality that we reproduce a system based on inequality, exploitation, lack of freedom, and environmental destruction. As material for improvisation, we will draw on ideas, fears, worries, fragility, projections, and expectations. No prior musical knowledge is required.

Through this workshop, we will try to practically answer these questions:
– Is free improvisation possible under current conditions?
– How can we improvise with our subjectivity?
– How can we relate to this mental state of noise?

Mattin’s concerts are unpredictable — improvisation and noise will be present, but not in an obvious way. His performances are acts of activation and engagement with the audience: a sonic stage that seeks to make something happen. An improvisation with our expectations, the situation, and with ourselves. This could turn into deep listening, scream therapy, audience collaboration, a noise coven (akelarre), musical fragments in a bottomless tunnel, or simply a conversation. An ambiguous situation that signals psychic destabilization and the horizon of paranoia and alienation, crystallizing as a call to mobilization. A form of social noise asking: How can we move beyond the liberal individual?
