‘Encounters, confrontation, traces. Most of all, presence.’

In the exhibition ola / wave by the German-born Barcelona-based artist Esther Kläs at Proyecto AMIL, these things happen on multiple levels. The exhibition brings together different groups of works: tall monolithic sculptures, mixed media drawings/prints and flat skin-like silicon sculptures which the artist made during her three month residency in Lima earlier this year. If it were to be simplified, the vertical sculptures occupy a space demonstrating their presence whereas the silicon floor pieces describe a negative space. Through the encounter with the works these spaces reverse.

The large three panel drawing shows this movement clearly. Traces of past lines and patches over former thick marks yield to make room for new lines. Everything is visible, everything important to get to the final result.

Esther’s work appears raw; the surface is considered at the beginning and not at the end. Strong entities play off each other forming groups and vistas across the two rooms of the Proyecto AMIL main gallery.

Two events have been organized in conjunction with the show. The first event, ‘A Conversation in Motion’ will take place on 10 November and will be an informal talk between the artist and Proyecto AMIL founder Juan Carlos Verme. The second event on November 23 will be a 45 minute ‘action/encounter’ with the participation of artists Moyra Silva Rodriguez and Stefania Merea Massignan.

A catalogue, made in collaboration with the independent writer and curator Philip Larratt-Smith, is forthcoming.
